Where is the placement? Our hospitality placements are currently on the Caribbean shoreline near the coastal town of Trujillo. Trujillo is a three hour drive from San Pedro Sula and a two hour drive from La Cieba.
There is the unique chance to work as a DJ in San Pedro Sula. In your spare time make the most of the buzzing city night life or shop in the markets and squares.
What will I do?
If you work in the hostel you need to be able to turn your hand to anything; a positive attitude is a must.
You will be in the kitchen one day, behind the bar the next and cleaning the rooms the next.
Ideally this placement will welcome people who have some experience of working in a bar and restaurant. You need to be out going, hard working and keen to have fun. If you have spoken Spanish to at least GCSE level then this will add to your experience - however as the clientele visit the hostel from all around the world then any languages will be welcomed.
A clean UK driving licence will be very useful although not essential.
In return for your work you will be accommodated in the hostel and get free meals and a beer or two.
If you work as a D.J. you must have a serious interest in music and music production, good, confident spoken Spanish, and a willingness to work at anything from going live on the airwaves through to sweeping the floors.
Where will I live?
On the hospitality placement you will live in the hostel accommodation whilst you are working. The accommodation is basic but more than adequate. You will have access to toilet and shower facilities.
The accommodation is free - you are not paid on this placement and the accommodation is the reward for all your hard work.
The hostel is safe and secure although we would suggest you take the usual precautions as visitors are always coming and going.
In most cases you will live in shared accommodation in the hostels or with a host family. This will be basic but there is access to washing and toilet facilities. Your hosts will provide hot, delicious and highly nutritious food that will ensure a full and varied diet throughout your stay.
Despite all the hardships you will find yourself among warm and caring people and you will be free to share your special talents and interests with those who will really appreciate it.
What support do I get?
Our Changing Worlds representative, Kenny Mackay, will meet you on arrival at San Pedro Sula international airport. Kenny, whose distant ancestors come from Scotland, was born in Honduras. He has spent most of his life in Honduras, although he spent some time living and working in Miami in the USA - hence his excellent English. You will enjoy two weeks orientation in San Pedro Sula where you will do a Spanish course, and Kenny will brief you further about working and living in Honduras. Kenny will organize the transport to your placement. He will contact you and your hosts regularly to check on your health and welfare and make at least one visit to see how everything is going.
What do I need?
A positive attitude is a must and you must be someone who does not shirk responsibilities. This would suit someone who wishes to work in the hospitality industry in the future, someone who wishes to learn Spanish and who likes to have lots of fun.
You will need a UK passport valid six months beyond your stay in Honduras. We will tell you all about applying for a visa before you leave the UK.
You will need adequate travel insurance for the entire period you are planning to be away from the UK.
Am I eligible?
Anyone who is willing to work hard and play hard can apply. This would suit someone with a genuine interest in working in the hospitality industry in the future because you will learn some much in a very short time.
What do I do in my free time?
Where should we start? Honduras offers a lot of wonderful experiences. For a kick off the tropical Caribbean Sea is a stone’s throw from where you are living. You can go snorkelling and swimming with the dolphins on a daily basis.
Trujillo is a tourist town so there are plenty of bars and restaurants to enjoy on your days (and nights off!). The town is very safe and you will quickly make friends with all the locals - they certainly know how to party!
There are mountains to climb, rivers to canoe, forests to explore on your doorstep. If you enjoy wildlife then there is plenty to find locally. Further a field you can drive (or take a bus) to La Cieba that is two hours away and a further hour beyond that is the bustling city of San Pedro Sula.
There are regular (and cheap) ferry trips from La Cieba out to the Bay Islands that is home to some of the best coral diving in the World!
What is the cost?
The three to six month hospitality placement costs £2495.
The three to six month radio work placement costs £2995.
This covers return flights from London to San Pedro Sula, accommodation and food, UK briefing, orientation on arrival and on going support whilst in Honduras. You will enjoy a one-week tour of the ancient ruins of Copan and neighboring Guatamala and a Spanish course as part of your initial orientation.
