This programme is designed for people who are interested in water safety and want to teach others about the responsibilities involved in being a lifeguard. After qualifying as a lifeguard you will spend time working and teaching in a variety of water environments, developing the skills necessary to become a certified Lifeguard Instructor.Where will I be?
The programme is based at The Lifeguard School in Port Elizabeth on South Africa’s southern coast. It is home to some of the country’s top instructors who will endeavour to pass on as much of their lifeguarding knowledge as possible, giving you the best possible start to a career as a Lifeguard Instructor. The Lifeguard School is where you will learn to become a lifeguard yourself, under professional instruction and training, and where you will complete your instructor training through work experience. Port Elizabeth is a hot spot for international travellers who are attracted by its lively atmosphere and endless adventure opportunities.
What will I be doing?
The Lifeguard Instructor course is a combination of practical and mental training during which you will sit practical and written exams to test and prove your knowledge. You will also undertake valuable work experience at The Lifeguard School to develop and consolidate your understanding. The overall lifeguard instructor training course is split into two parts. The first part will see you train to become a competent lifeguard and the second part will expand your skills and knowledge, enabling you to become a certified lifeguard instructor yourself.Week 1
Training, theory and examinations. After successful completion you will receive a Lifeguard award from Lifesaving South Africa (LSA).
Week 2
Lifeguard work experience at The Lifeguard School in Port Elizabeth.
Week 3-5
Training, theory and examinations. This will see you receive a Lifeguard Instructor Award from LSA.
Week 6-12
Work experience at The Lifeguard School, teaching young South Africans the skills they need to become qualified lifeguards. This period can be extended if you want to gain more work experience.
How fit do I need to be?
Due to the physical demands of working as a lifeguard you will need to be fit and healthy and able to comfortably swim 400m in 8 minutes in a 50m pool. Enthusiasm and commitment to improving your strength and stamina during the course will be supported by free and unlimited access to the gym at The Lifeguard School. Most of all you need to enjoy working with people both in and out of the water and have a healthy respect for water safety. What can I do after the course?
Caught the travelling bug and want to explore more of Africa and have no idea where to start? Want to spend more time in the water and maybe learn to surf?
