Learn to surf or kitesurf and develop your passion for these exciting water sports in the country that has hosted the last four Kiteboarding World Cups and where surfers ride the waves all year round. The Dominican Republic is a haven for water sports thanks to a reliable morning swell and the consistent Trade Winds which blow across the island every afternoon. You will soon fall in love with its relaxed atmosphere and friendly people.
Where will I be?
Both the kitesurfing and surfing courses are based in Cabarete, a beautiful beach town on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic. The area has designated kite and surfing beaches, which makes it the perfect destination to enjoy a new sport, safe in the knowledge that you are less likely to crash into any unsuspecting sunbathers or swimmers! You will live in a beach lodge alongside other kitesurfers and surfers from all over the world who have come to enjoy Cabarete’s unrivalled water sport reputation and social scene.
What will I be doing - Kitesurfing
Whether you are a beginner or an improver, these courses will take you through the IKO (International Kiteboarding Organisation) Levels as you learn a whole new array of skills, from control of the kite on land, to tricks and jumping in the water. Levels 1 to 3 will be awarded, once you have reached the necessary standard, by professional instructors who love teaching others their favourite sport. Instruction will take place in small groups and you will be able to develop in the sport at your own pace, all against the tropical backdrop of Cabarete in the Dominican Republic - the kiteboarding capital of the world!
As a beginner, you will typically experience your first ride at the end of the first week, having learnt how to set up your kiteboarding equipment and the basics of launching and landing. In week two your technique will be improved to allow upwind riding enabling you to gain sufficient confidence to ride independently. Subsequent weeks will be spent in/on the water and you will have more time to develop strengths and weaknesses.
As an intermediate kitesurfer you will receive an assessment on arrival to determine your current kitesurfing ability. You will then receive personal tuition to hone your existing technique and strengthen your understanding of the sport.
What will I be doing - Surfing
As a beginner or intermediate surfer you will receive an initial assessment of your surfing ability to enable our pro surf instructors to start your lessons at a suitable level. They will tailor their instruction to suit your ability and you will be encouraged to progress at your own pace. Lessons take place in the morning before the Trade Winds kick in and disturb the waves, although you are free to surf throughout the day. ‘Surfaris’ to nearby beaches are also available and will give you the opportunity to test your skills in a variety of settings, including reef and beach break waves, suitable for both long and short boards.
If you are completely new to surfing, you will be introduced to the basics of the sport, including paddling techniques, sitting on and turning the board, and basic ocean awareness skills. Typically, a beginner will get to their feet during days one or two on a long board in white water waves. After a week’s tuition, you should be paddling unassisted into white water and riding confidently across the white water waves.
If you are a novice surfer, your instructor will give you a review session on arrival. They will ensure you are properly up to speed on the key surfing techniques and you should be back on your board in no time. Over the weeks, your instructor will work on developing and fine tuning your previously acquired basic skills, adding new advanced manoeuvres, and through feedback and supervision assist the implementation of such techniques to catch larger and faster waves.
