For applicants from the UK, we have a number of bursary schemes available for volunteers from a variety of backgrounds.
Our bursary scheme and funded placement projects reduce the barrier of cost for young people experiencing financial problems. They are designed to help young people who would not otherwise be able to afford to go.
For more information contact Liz McKenna on lmckenna@lattitude.org.uk
Lattitude volunteer, you will teach English in a local state school. There are three sessions - morning, afternoon and evening. Each child only attends one session, but teachers are required to teach in any of them, so you may have some evening classes The students are usually teenagers. In most placements volunteers will have the challenging and rewarding task of having their own class and also supporting other teachers as a teacher assistant. Some volunteers have been asked to help with social projects as well.
The state schools are very under resourced. Standards in Brazilian state schools are extremely low. Sometimes it is difficult to recognize that English teachers speak English. It is immensely valuable if you have the opportunity to help teachers with their English - maybe organize workshops.
The state of Parana is almost the size of the UK. You may be in a small town of 18,000 inhabitants in a small school, or you may be in a town of 150,000. You will be on your own but with another Lattitude volunteer a bus ride away.
Few Brazilians speak English, so there is a compulsory week’s introduction to Portuguese in Sao Paulo and a teaching skills course.
