For applicants from the UK, we have a number of bursary schemes available for volunteers from a variety of backgrounds.
Our bursary scheme and funded placement projects reduce the barrier of cost for young people experiencing financial problems. They are designed to help young people who would not otherwise be able to afford to go.
For more information contact Liz McKenna on lmckenna@lattitude.org.uk
Lattitude volunteers in China find it hard to leave and many prolong their stay in the country as long as they can. Some even amend their UK University courses to include a Chinese module! This is not surprising as the people of China are courteous, welcoming and their culture has much to offer from the Great Wall, to Tian'anmen Square, the Terracotta Army and the latest Architecture in Shanghai. One-fifth of the world's population lives in The People's Republic of China (1,313,973,713 estimated 2006) and the covers seven percent of the world's land area.
Lattitude placements in China are based in schools in seven provinces in South and East China, from fast-developing Jiangsu to rural areas of Yunnan. Our placements are highly valued by the host schools, so this really is an opportunity to make a difference and help out schools in China. The work will test your personal skills, but the satisfaction you will get from teaching conversational English, which young people desperately want to learn from a native speaker, will be well worth the effort. You may get invitations to weddings, parties, family homes and even appear as local celebrities on TV. As an additional bonus, you may find yourself working alongside an Australian volunteer. Accommodation is provided in self-contained apartments generally on campus.
As well as all pre-departure preparation, we also offer an orientation and teaching skills course in China to make sure you are prepared for your work.
China is a marvelous country to visit on a gap year. Despite the rate of economic change, it remains a culturally fascinating country, and the friendliness and warmth of your hosts will amaze you.
Locations

September to January, or February to July (the actual duration of your placement will vary according to the type of school/college and its examination schedule.)Accommodation
Most volunteers will live in accommodation provided on the school campus, as many of the teachers do: some will live in part of the student dormitory blockQualities / skills required
- An abundance of common sense and a sense of humour are as well as a good standard written and spoken English.
- You will have to be adaptable to the attitudes, values and customs of a very different culture. Very often you will need to exercise great patience when Chinese and Western ways seem to be at odds with each other.
- Courtesy, good manners, sensitivity and punctuality are all important qualities in a volunteer. Careful lesson preparation and good timekeeping are very much the Chinese style.
