Based deep in the Peruvian rainforest, this volunteer project takes place alongside jungle communities on a tributary to the Amazon River. You will be working in areas untouched by tourism and you will go deep into the Amazon region, a very exclusive place to have travelled. At the project, volunteers get to take part in turtle conservation, working with wildlife in South America up close.
You should consider this volunteer placement if you are keen to work on a back-to basics conservation project. This is an excellent volunteer experience in one of the best and inaccessible environments in the world to work and travel.
Volunteer Role
So far our turtle conservation programme has achieved the liberation of more than 330,000 baby turtles into their original habitat. Volunteers on this project are in for an amazing, exciting, and very authentic rainforest experience. Activities volunteers could be involved in:
- Patrol river beaches to collect nests and eggs
- Construct artificial breeding beaches
- Incubate turtle eggs
- Collect and record scientific data on egg collection, hatching rates and characteristics of the hatchlings.
- Mark and liberate the hatchlings back into the wild
Please Note: An intermediate level of Spanish is required for this project.
Accommodation
During the volunteer programme, you will live alongside 4 different rainforest communities. Your accommodation will be in shared tents. Volunteers should be prepared for a very basic volunteer experience. Meals are included; please expect the food to be basic.
