For applicants from the UK, we have a number of bursary schemes available for volunteers from a variety of backgrounds.
Our bursary scheme and funded placement projects reduce the barrier of cost for young people experiencing financial problems. They are designed to help young people who would not otherwise be able to afford to go.
For more information contact Liz McKenna on lmckenna@lattitude.org.uk
Ghana, Lattitude’s first project in west Africa. Ghana is a stable country with many resources, although these are not well developed and many Ghanaians live in poverty. Volunteers however, will be assured of a warm welcome and will have the opportunity to visit nature reserves largely undiscovered by mass tourism.
Placements are in schools at all levels: kindergarten, primary, junior and secondary. Volunteers teach English and any subject they are more familiar with. Volunteers also support other areas such as literacy, math, French, environmental studies, sports, music, art and craft, etc
There is room for volunteers to use their own initiative. You must be prepared to look for opening for your particular talents. Activities initiated by former volunteers are for example: development of teaching materials for the use of the school; organisation and implementation of classes in sex education and HIV/AIDs,; set up of special needs classes for small group of learners, organise drama clubs, etc.
One project is in a school for children with special needs. Some pupils are refugees from the Ivory Coast. All placements are located along the coast between Takoradi and Accra, a bustling modern city, so contact between volunteers is possible.
