Mukurumuji Camp is located in a secluded region of the Shimba Hills National Reserve boundary. It is surrounded by indigenous communities and a wide variety of wildlife. Base yourself at Mukurumuji Camp for this two-week African adventure, which comprises volunteer work, an elephant safari and fun ocean activities.About the camp
Camp Mukurumuji (Mu-ku-roo-moo-ji) is situated at the foothills of Shimba Hills National Reserve and is named after the Mukurumuji River ('Where People Meet') which flows through the property.
Partnership programmes with the local community as well as the Sable Valley Wildlife Sanctuary compliment the rather more luxurious, 'old-style' safari feel of the camp. The camp is totally surrounded by an ancient, impressive and unfortunately now very rare equatorial rainforest. Accommodation consists of luxury permanent tented accommodation as well as four thatched cottages and a very special suite with a remarkable open shower overlooking the Shimba Hills. The traditionally thatched, mud brick dining room and kitchen also reflect the style of a bygone 'Out of Africa' tradition. About this placement
Included in the cost of this placment are the following activities...
Orientation: Camp Kenya views your orientation as one of the most important parts of your responsible tourism adventure in Kenya. You will be taken on a local orientation to explore the bush, local school and meet the nearby villagers. In the evening you will have your first taste of the local language with some Swahili lessons and some basic first aid training.
Two days' elephant sanctuary safari: Going on safari must be one of the most exhilarating holiday adventures, and when you choose Kenya as your destination, the experience simply can’t be beaten. From the majestic peak of Mt Kenya and the remote Serengeti Plains, the endless dry savannah to the mystical aura of the African bush, this landscape of incomparable drama and solitude never fails to astound, captivate and intrigue.
Project work: Camp Kenya has committed to improving the local school infastructure. You will be involved with project initiatives that include desk-making, construction, painting, teaching, landscaping and tree planting. It is important that you spend a few days at the school in order to see through your project objectives and build a relationship with the children and staff. The welcome the school offers you can be a humbling experience and your personal contribution will provide significant input into the sustainable programme for the ongoing development of the children’s education and welfare. Community trips: Kenya offers unrivalled possibilities for culture enthusiasts. You will experience an intense variety of Kenya's unique cultural heritage from the revered Masai tribe to the spiritual Digo people. Hands-on activities based at local homesteads (shambas) provide an authentic and very real immersion into normal African lives.
Ocean trips: Only 45 minutes from Shimba Hills lies the beautiful white sands of the Indian Ocean and Diani Beach. Considered as Kenya's 'Gold Coast', Diani Beach offers superb Scuba diving, dolphin and whale shark safaris, kite surfing, and jet-skiing as well as one of the World's finest beaches. There are also plenty of bars, restaurants and shops to check out. Included in the cost of your programme is a superb beach BBQ complete with seafood.
