Oyster offers you the chance to live and teach in this most unspoilt and fascinating country. Oyster has connections with a number of schools and projects in and around Kathmandu. You will travel with a group of likeminded individuals and live either with local Nepalese families or in school hostel accommodation. Oyster’s aim in Nepal is for volunteers to become fully culturally immersed and to truly get under the skin of the country. You are not a tourist!
Oyster combines your worthwhile voluntary projects with some fantastic trips in Nepal and Tibet.
For those people that do not have the time to spend 4 months in Nepal, we also have a shorter summer placement departing in July for 5 weeks. This includes a 4 week worthwhile community project and also a short Himalayan trek and rafting/safari trip. Please enquire for more information.
The Projects...
Oyster has been sending volunteers to work in Nepalese schools since the year 2000. You will be volunteering on projects where you can make a real difference to those children’s lives. The schools we use are mostly English medium which means that the children can speak basic English. Your role as a volunteer in these schools is to get the children to use their imagination when using English through getting them to write stories for example.
Equally as important as the teaching, is the extra curricular activities that you can do with the children. If you have interests in sport, drama, music or art then these can really be utilised in Nepalese schools. Recently two of volunteers put on a musical production of Jack and the Beanstalk!
Accommodation...
Most volunteers will live with selected local Nepali families in the same village as their school. A couple of the schools and projects have their own accommodation that volunteers can stay in. This is generally boarding school accommodation and provides a fantastic opportunity to do extra curricular activities on your door-step. Volunteers should expect to share a room with another Oyster volunteer.
Living with a family sounds pretty daunting to most people; however it really is one of the best ways to get fully culturally immersed in the country and learn the language. You will be welcomed into family life and will be invited to attend family gatherings and you will eat with the family.
Do I get a social life..?
Most volunteers choose to go into Kathmandu at the weekends to meet with each other. Accommodation in Kathmandu is very cheap and volunteers can stay for the equivalent of £2.50 per night.
The schools do have academic holidays and during those times you will be able to do some independent travel and trekking. You can also help out on one of the other projects that need your help in Kathmandu.
The Trips...
Included in this placement are 4 fantastic trips that are designed to give you more of an insight into the way of life of the Nepali and Tibetan people. You and your group will go on a 10 day Himalayan trek, a 10 day cultural tour of Tibet, a 2 day white water rafting trip and a 2 day safari in Chitwan National Park. You’ll see some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world as well as life in remote rural areas.
Oyster Worldwide Support
Being a small and personal Gap Year company, our dedicated team of 3 full time staff, can take the time to get to know you and offer a personal service. On receiving your application, we invite you to an informal interview and tell you all about what you have applied for. 3 months before departure, we meet you and the rest of your group again at the Pre Departure Course.
The close and personal support continues in Nepal where our Representative Basant becomes your main point of contact. Basant is there to help with any problems that you may have both at the school and in your personal life. Oyster has the right balance between support and independence and as such our representatives are not your typical ‘holiday rep’. You are encouraged to help yourself and be independent but can be safe in the knowledge that you can fall back onto our established support network should you need it.
Basant has been our Nepal Representative since our first volunteers went out in 2000. He has lived and worked in Kathmandu for most of his life. Basant will meet you at the airport and run a thorough orientation course which covers all you need to know about living in Nepal. Basant works in central Kathmandu and volunteers pop in and see him when they are in town. He becomes a real friend to the participants and is still in touch with many past volunteers.
