Changing Worlds can offer the unique opportunity to work in this strongly independent Baltic state in Eastern Europe. Latvia is a warm hearted and beautiful country. The capital Riga is bubbling with life, it has some of the most beautiful architecture in Eastern Europe with narrow cobbled streets, plenty of shops and good restaurants, pubs and nightclubs.

However there is another side to Latvia and that is why you are needed.

English language is an international language that Latvians want to learn - you can offer this help.

We send volunteers to act as support workers in social care centres working with children and young adults.

We send volunteers to work in kindergarten where children are taught in the Waldorf method of teaching.

We send volunteers to work in a small language school where all you have to do is turn up and chat...yes it is as simple as that.

Latvians rarely hear spoken English (not even on the TV!) and for this reason would welcome some practice.

You can combine all three placements or focus on one.

Youth work is not for everybody but if you want to make an instant impact and leave a long lasting legacy then you might be interested in working with young adults.

As you know young adults at 14 - 18 years old are going through many changes and need the support of the local community. Teenagers require role models and this is where you come in.

Changing WorldsThis is not an easy option and will be hard work and will test your patience to the very limits like they have never been tested before...however the rewards are great and you can make friends very quickly with young people from backgrounds that you would rarely meet in your local neighbourhood.

We need volunteers who enjoy a challenge, can work as part of a busy team and can take the knocks. You need to be flexible and very open minded and willing to have a go at absolutely anything.

In all cases you will communicate in English that is unlikely to be the first language of the young adults in your care...sign language will always come in useful and you will need to talk confidently and carefully so you can understand. Clearly if you can learn the local language (at least some anyway!) then this will be well received.

As a result you do need to have had some prior knowledge of working with this age group. However if you are interested in absolutely anything (from computers to sewing to sport to music) and feel you have the personal qualities we are looking for then we would encourage you to apply to us.

Our users say

"The time had come for our final evening at 10x10 youth club. We had held a farewell sleepover with a few of the kids, but I knew it would be hard when we saw them for the last time. Many of the children had bought us roses, and it was evident that the love I had grown for these kids was shared all round as nearly every face in the room became tearful and sad. It felt as though after 3 months I had known these guys for a lifetime. I was a real part of their lives, as they have been a part of mine. I knew right then how worthwhile my time had been"
