If you're travelling Down Under, then you'll be needing a visa. The cheapest, fastest and easiest option for getting a visa for Australian travel is the ETA (Electronic Travel Authority).

The ETA is the most advanced and streamlined travel authorisation system in the world, replacing the need for physical application forms, visa labels or stamps. The Australian ETA is an electronically stored authority for travel to Australia for short-term tourist visits or business entry, and is usually processed instantly.

So what can I do on my ETA Visitor Visa?

The ETA (Visitor) Visa allows a person to stay in Australia for up to 3 months on each arrival within 12 months from the date of the grant. It differs from traditional visas in that there are no application forms to fill in and no visa label or stamp in the passport; no fuss, no bother, just very easy.

However, this means that you must apply for your ETA with the passport and passport number you will be travelling to Australia with; the visa is linked to this number. If your passport is lost/stolen or replaced before you travel to Australia, you will be required to re-apply for an ETA visa.

The ETA is available to passport holders from Australian Government specified countries and regions. To apply for an ETA (Visitor), you must be outside Australia and hold a passport issued by an ETA-eligible country or region.

What nationalities are eligible for an ETA Visitor Visa?

Firstly, applicants MUST hold a passport from one of the ETA Eligible Countries. The list of countries is as follows:

Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong (SAR), Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Monaco, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Republic of San Marino, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan*, United Kingdom (British Citizen), United Kingdom (Overseas)**, United States of America, Vatican City.

* Holders of Taiwan passports can only be processed for an ETA if resident in and applying in Taiwan.
** Holders of UK passports which indicate their nationality to be British National (Overseas) can only be processed for an ETA if resident in and applying in Hong Kong.

What are the conditions for an ETA Visitor Visa?

Visitors to Australia must be willing and able to abide by the visa validity and conditions while in Australia. If you do not abide by these conditions, your visa may be cancelled or you may be subject to other penalties. The conditions are as follows:

• The holder must not engage in work in Australia;
• While in Australia the holder must not engage, for more than 3 months, in any studies or training;
• If the holder is at least 11 years of age and:
• Is from a country other than a country that is designated, by Gazette Notice, as a country in relation to which this condition does not apply; and
  Intends to study in a class-room environment for a period greater than 4 weeks;
  ...then the holder must, before commencing that study, pass a chest X-ray examination carried out by a medical practitioner who is qualified as a radiologist;
• The holder will not, after entering Australia, be entitled to a substantive visa, other than a protection visa, while the holder remains in Australia; and
• The holder must depart within the validity of the Visitor Visa.
