You'll be able to both coach and play squash at a club in Perth where you'll work with the junior teams and play for the senior men's or women's teams.

Squash is not as popular in Australia as Aussie Rules and cricket (but then, what sport is!) squash struggles to attract large number of children to the game.

This is where you come in - and where you can make a difference. Your help is needed to coach the children and at the same time develop their interest in the sport. You'll also be helping to develop the sport at the grass roots level.

On this project you'll be working with a number of junior squads at the club. The squads vary in ability and you will have the opportunity to work with a variety of standards.

You'll also have the opportunity to play in the inter-club squash league that takes place throughout the year.

As the main squash project won't occupy all your time, during the daytime you'll work on the Refugee Sports Project. Here you can coach squash and/or a number of other sports for around 4-5 hours every day, leaving your evenings free to coach and train with the squash team.

The Squash Project
As a Travellers squash coach, you will be working at a squash club conveniently located fairly close to your accommodation in Perth.

The club has a large number of squash courts and a large number of juniors that you will coach. They also have a number of senior men's, women's and mixed teams that you will have the opportunity to play for in the Pennant Interclub League.

As a squash coach you will have the opportunity to work with a number of junior squads at the club. In these squads, the ages of the children range between 6 and 18. The squads are divided into talent groups which are listed below:

• Beginners
• Intermediates
• Advanced

If you would also like to play squash on this project, you will have the opportunity to do so with a number of senior men's, women's and mixed teams. There is a good mixture of standards at the clubs, so there is something for everyone.

The squash season and coaching times

The squash playing season runs from:

• Autumn Season: February - June
• Spring Season: July - December

Coaching and playing times are as follows:

• Juniors coaching: Friday 3:30 - 7:30 (with optional coaching on Saturday)
• Senior playing: Monday - Thursday 7:30 - 9:30

Please Note: If you would like to join this project, please keep in mind that coaching only takes part during the school terms - but playing squash is available all year around.

Accommodation
Your accommodation is located in the CBD (Central Business District) of Perth, Western Australia. Therefore you are very central, close to the main train station and shopping district.

You'll be accommodated in a centrally located lodge that is friendly and relaxing, making it ideal for long-term stays. You may have your own room or you may share a room with other volunteers. There is an excellent kitchen and storage area for cooking meals and plenty of space to relax.

Entertainment at your accommodation includes a pool table, cheap internet access, arcade machines and cable TV (Foxtel), to name a few. But with all the sunshine Perth has, you’ll be out and about enjoying the many outdoor activities! You are literally a stroll from the Swan River and free CBD transport. Trains and buses are also only a few minutes away to take you to Fremantle, King’s Park or to the many other ‘things to do’! The city centre boasts great shopping, restaurants and pubs or head over to Northbridge for more pubs, nightclubs and multicultural cuisine. You'll get to work via bus, which stops outside your accommodation.

Perth was built on the banks of the magnificent Swan River over 150 years ago and is now a city rich in culture and filled with theatres, art galleries and museums. The city is modern and vibrant - a fun, friendly and 'laid back' place, with clear skies and a sunny climate. Western Australia is locally known as the 'state of excitement!'

Some of its more famous attractions include Kings Park, Scarborough Beach, Fremantle and the Swan River. Fremantle (or as the local’s call it, ‘Freo’) is the city’s port and is rich in history. At weekends you will find markets, entertainment and plenty of alfresco style cafes to laze in.

Perth has restaurants to suit all tastes, but the most popular cuisine is, of course, the great Australian BBQ. Barbeque facilities are abundant in local parks - take your own food and cook up a feast, Australian style!

For meals in local restaurants, a trip to Perth's inner city centre is well worth the effort - it bustles with activity and offers a range of choices of restaurants.
