Thinking about coaching sport during your gap year or career break? Don't have any qualifications? Got loads of qualifications? Whatever your coaching experience, a sports coaching placement in South Africa is a great way to enjoy your favourite sports overseas.
What sports can I coach?
Any combination of the following: basketball, cricket, football/soccer, hockey, netball, rugby, swimming and tennis. And this list is constantly being extended so check out our website for the latest activities on offer.
You can coach more than one sport if you’re finding it difficult to choose, or combine a sports coaching placement with a non-sports project such as teaching or care work.
What will I be doing?
As a volunteer sports coach your role will be to work alongside disadvantaged children (typically aged 8-16) in the townships surrounding the coastal city of Port Elizabeth. Although details vary depending on the sport, your placement will generally involve coaching in schools or sports clubs in and around the city, giving more children access to organised sport. Some of them might have played the sport before, for others it will be their first time, and your own playing experience will be invaluable in teaching these children the basics. After introducing basic skills you will be able to develop their technique and introduce match play - something they really enjoy and is a great reward for their (and your) hard work.
As your players develop, the emphasis is as much about developing skills such as teamwork and communication, as it is about giving the children an opportunity to have fun. Their smiling faces and enthusiasm are really infectious and you’ll certainly find it difficult to leave! Your friendship, coaching skills and life advice can make a real difference to the lives of these young people and your sessions can be really motivational in terms of both sporting and academic performance.
Do I need coaching qualifications?
Most of our coaching placements take place at a grassroots level so no prior coaching experience is necessary. As long as you have experience playing/practising the sport and understand the rules, you will be welcomed with open arms by our team in South Africa.
If you do have coaching qualifications and want to work with higher/elite level players, do let us know. Previous experience is always useful and will allow you to hit the ground running when you arrive. Whether you are a professional coach or just enjoy playing sport with your friends, our in-country team will support you throughout the placement and give you advice on possible training drills and coaching techniques.
Where will I be living?
Most of our sports and non-sports volunteers live together in a shared house not far from the centre of Port Elizabeth. Not only does this create a really nice social atmosphere and ready-made friends for those travelling solo, it also provides an excellent bank of talented sports people who often form (or join) sports teams to compete against local opposition! You didn’t think it would be all work and no play did you?
Socialising and travel are also high on the agenda and our in-country team can give you loads of advice on where to go and what to do in your spare time.
