My Top Tips

1. Bring along a light sleeping bag and blow up pillow, you can use your pass to sleep on the night trains saving money for hostels and you wake up in a new city when you arrive (double bonus).
2. Make business cards with your email address on so if you have to run off the train suddenly you can pass on your details quickly to the person you were talking to and keep in contact.
3. Take along some toilet paper; you will thank me when you get caught short.
4. Bring along a water bottle, you will save lots of money by filling it up as you go along.
5. Try and buy from supermarkets and not train station vending machines, they can be very expensive.
6. Order a Debit card you can use them all around Europe making it easy to access your money anywhere.
7. Try and contact old friends who you might know in the places you are traveling to and ask if you can stay with them or meet for a coffee when you pass by, or even try couchsurfing.com to meet some locals to stay with.
8. Put orange peel in your boots to get rid of the cheese smell from your feet, people will like you more in hostels.
9. Try and put your name and address on everything and put a luggage tag on your bag, so if you lose it many train companies will post it back to your address.
10. Carry a reusable bag as many supermarkets charge you for bags, they also double up as a laundry bag and it’s good for the environment.
11. Try and gather as many discount cards you can find such as YHA card, student card so you can save money on the road.
12. When travelling with a rail pass rather than just stopping off at the major cities randomly jump off at a town you have never heard of, you never know what you might discover.
